On Wednesday Paige had a feeding tube put down her nose.  This narrow bit of white plastic provided her first nourishment in four days.  It did not get high marks from the girl who heads straight for Cindy the dessert chef, revels in the variety of boarding school food, and was a leading competitor in the school pie eating contest.

Paige had improved enough by evening to be moved from the intensive care unit to the special care unit.  She became increasingly restless as evening wore on into night, and she was fitted first with large white mittens, and then with arm restraints to keep her from removing her many wires and tubes.  Her doctor told us that her agitation was an instinctive flight response to waking in a frightening environment.

At one point, a new nurse asked if we could do anything for her.  Paige responded, out of the blue, "Make me fly".

We hope that Paigey rests well tonight and soars in her dreams.  We are thinking of her following John Gillespie Magee's High Flight:

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled  and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence.  Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue,
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

  1. Paige-

I went digging though old pictures from camp and found one of you and SB, with many pigtails, all in red and white. It must have been Canada Day, because there's a later one of all of us in front of Caribou. While I am worried for you, I'm so encouraged by your progress and have decided that a girl with a smile that wide and the ability to wear that many pigtails simultaneously will indeed fly again. I'm praying for you and your family.

  15. Paige Landon Host,

Where do i possibly begin. From the first time I met you in 2004 at ADK, from there i knew we would be best friends. Over the summer after the 4th of july, i have never had such a comforting, sweet, caring friend. You were by my side through my recovery and i will most defiantly will be there for yours. We have had so many fun times. Whether its dancing around in our hanky pankys in bou den, showering and covering each other from head to toe of raspberry mist shaving cream, driving around from 1 in the morning till 4 and along the way stopping at McDonalds only ordering the normal amount of food two number 2's, a big mac, two large fries, and two large milkshakes, or you stopping the car in the middle of the street because you claimed you saw an armadillo. No matter where we are we always manage to have the best time. Paige i hope you realize what an amazing friend you are, i know this recovery must be hard but girl ill be by your side till the end. Keep your head up high the best is on its way. My prayers are with you.I love you POOPIE!!

    Always and Forever,
    Mal

  17. Andrew Ledee told me about this blog and I thought I would say that although didn't know Paige very well, I'm glad that I got to meet her for the brief time that I got to in camp.

But, even in those few moments, I learned enough to be able to clearly see that she'll bounce back from this with minimal problems, thats just the kind of person that she seems to be.

Best wishes to you and yours,
    Hayden Sammak
