Thursday found Paige still very grounded. She was wired to monitors, and her arms were still in restraints. But tonight she flicked her extended first two fingers rapidly back and forth and whispered, "Scissors...I want scissors". She is determined to escape.

Paige later asked about her condition (after conquering her restraints). Her mother assured her, "Trust me, you will be fine." She responded calmly, "Trusting you is not enough". Two well trained doctors later, she seemed more at ease. Shades of Ronald Reagan's "Trust, but verify".

Paige had her first physical therapy test and scored well responding to commands. Her swelling is going down. Feeding is the next issue. The swallowing reflex can apparently be damaged in traumatic brain injury, and it needs to be tested and retrained to ensure that her nourishment goes into the stomach and not the lungs. That testing process will start tomorrow. Paige will be restrained less and enjoy herself more when her food no longer comes through a hose in the nose.

Several of you have asked about sending her cards and letters. Please mail them to Paige at 5 Pierson Drive, Greenwich CT 06831, and we will make sure that she gets them. Your comments on the blog are a great alternative to cards because you write so well, we all enjoy them, and the comments are preserved for Paige to read and answer when her fingers are once again flying over her keyboard.

Others have asked about visiting. At this stage, Paige MUST stay calm to help her recovery. Visitors are strongly discouraged for now. This will be true at least through the weekend. We will of course post as soon as Paige is ready for company, which she loves.

In the meantime, we pray for the rest that refreshes her soul and body, and we look forward to the day when the wind is once more at her back and the sun shines warmly on her face.

Thank you for all your wonderful support today, and throughout this week.

  6. Paige-

It is great to hear that you are recovering so well!! every english class i think about you and how i can barley survive in there without you. honestly i need you. oh and if you want a good laugh..chris noel has been throwing up up and down the hallway for the past 2 hours (curenly doing it now. its kinda discusting)...nevermind that. we are all thinking about you day in and day out. our meet on wednesday vs hopkins didnt end very well..but i got a 24.76 in my 50! the only sad thing is that you arent there to win it in the heat before me. the whole swim team is constantly thinking about you and we all swim for you! you are all in our hearts and it is great to hear a new update everyday. i cannot wait to come and visit you one of these weekends..probs not this one beacuse you still need to rest and not cut yourself out of the restraints. i love you and miss you!

    love, Christian

  7. Hey Paigey girl,
We've all been so relieved at the amazing updates we've been receiving, I want you to stay strong and keep getting better as fast as possible. I was thinking about you the other day during the inauguration, and I had the ingenious idea of making you a video of it and all the important news surrounding it etc...but then everyone told me that the news stations had already done that and it would probably be better than mine. Oh well, I guess when you get back we can you-tube it all together, I need another Obama Maniac around here like me, i'm getting lonely here girl!!
    stay strong baby,
    Jamie Jackson

  11. Hello Paige and family,
I start everyday checking the blog to read of your progress. The church service on Wednesday was great--50+ people came and Fr. V. helped us so much. We held hands and prayed for you too! I can hardly wait to start the shuttle service of bringing your friends to see you every Sunday! To say We Miss YOU is a huge understatement....there is a large hole on campus that only you fill. Fight hard to recover and return to us. Love (and chocolate chip cookies) Ms. M

  14. Paigie,
I have been reading these blogs, and during Theology class (as I am in right now), it is not such a good idea. My eyes are swelling up and people are beginning to wonder what is wrong with me haha. Reading about you wanting scissors, I couldn't help but remember when you would chase me down in preschool with scissors because I had hair. My mom and I were discussing how long we have actually known each other, and I cant remember ever not knowing Paige Host. I am so sorry that I have not worked harder to keep in touch these past few years, I honestly miss you so much pa. I miss you tackling me in the middle school hallways by jumping into my arms, dancing with you non stop at Grauer parties, and making those weird videos in 8th grade with you for some art class (I just remember that haha). You were always so great to talk to, Pa, whenever I needed advice or comfort. I am truly so sorry I am not there to comfort you now. At my school we believe strongly in the power of prayer and praying for one another, so not only my family and I, but my school too is praying for you. I can't help thinking of you without smiling, you were one of those people who just brighten your day and if you were upset, I think everyone was shocked or upset as well. I miss you so much and think of you every day.
    I love you,
    -Alex Gangitano
