Tonight Paige left Stamford Hospital and a cast of medical luminaries.  She will not remember them, but they have asked repeatedly that Paige return to see them for a victory lap when she is well.

As we followed the ambulance from Stamford to her acute rehabilitation facility in White Plains, New York, we reflected on the talented team that Paige would have adored: the petite, confident and caring head trauma surgeon in charge of Paige's case who greeted us grimly on that awful early Sunday morning and dismissed us today with a smile as wide as the Hudson River; the compassionate ICU attending physician from South Africa who stopped in twice on Paige this morning as he made his rounds; the beautiful Indian doctor in her bright blue scrubs who would appear in the very middle of the night to look in on Paige; the dashing young neurosurgeon who kept Liz alert all night so that she could give him a thorough report on Paige when he made his rounds at dawn; and the endless and varied cast of nurses, technicians and aides of every nationality who gave their days and nights to Paige's recovery.  Thanks to their collective good efforts, she is on the way to a triumphant return.

Paige now begins a comprehensive rehabilitation full of medical attention and extensive daily physical and occupational therapy.  She will be working hard and has much to learn, beginning with her swallowing, but she is supported by a talented team.

Ryan kindly returned to help us with night duty.  Paige's smile when she saw him moved us deeply.

  2. Paige, I am amazed and thrilled at your progress. You are one strong and determined girl! You have some awesome friends at Kent who all love you and miss you. Thanks so much to your mom for keeping us all apprised of your goings on - singing, "dancing", smiles big and wide, sleeping - or not, pulling out of feeding tubes, swallowing progress, etc. It's all good news and we'll continue to think of and pray for you and your family every day. Congrats on "breakin' out of that joint" in Stamford and movin' on up to White Plains. I know you'll dazzle them there with your daily progress in leaps and bounds and will undoubtedly be waving "bye-bye,so long" to all of them in no time. Keep up the good work. Love, Patty's mom, Mrs. Niemann.

  3. Hey Paigie,

I just want you to know that you are always in my prayers. I truly understand what you are going through, particularly the issues with your swallowing. I know you are really suffering right now. I'm so glad that you are moving forward to an acute rehab facility. It will not be easy, but take it on with everything you have because each day will bring you one step closer to your full recovery.

Please know that I am here for you in any way that you need. I know that your condition happened after mine for a reason, and I hope to be able to give you the comfort that I have received. I love you so much. I hope to be in touch soon.

    All my love,
    Katherine

  5. Congratulations on getting so much better that the hospital said you could graduate yesterday! Now you are at the best Rehab around, and when you work with them you will find that you will get back to your regular fantastic self. It will be tough at times and you may not feel like it, but you are on a team again and you know all about training and winning as a team!!!!
Yesterday was the first day I haven't seen you since the accident, and I missed you. But now I'll find out from Mom and Dad when you can fit me into your very busy schedule.

  7. Dear Paige,

We are thrilled to hear that you have been moved to a rehab facility and out of the hospital - that means you are making remarkable progress since the accident. Jim and I would love to be there to see you with our own eyes, but know that you are well covered by loving family and friends. And this Ryan fellow sounds pretty special! You will have to introduce him to your aunt and uncle!

The first thing I do every morning is check Katherine's blog and yours. I pray that you both continue with your recovery and that we can have a fun family reunion in the NEAR future.

    Love you so much,
    Uncle Jimmy and Aunt Terry

  8. Paige!

I'm soooo proud of you for getting through this first, and most difficult part, of your recovery. I don't think it would have been possible to get through it all without the support of all these friends and family.

You have to climb life's boulders before you can climb life's mountain.

  11. Dear Paige and Laurie and George,
A wonderful winterty day up here in Kent. The snow has covered all the dirty stuff and it's quiet and peaceful. Sports will likely be postponed which means Tuffy and I will get out in the woods for a walk or a ski. The sickness is ebbing around campus which is a very good thing. We are eager to visit you. Keep improving your swallowing so I can bring you cookies from cookie night! :-) Ms. M

  13. Dear Paige,
I watch your progress with delight. Yay Paige! And a wreath on the head of Champion Boyfriend Ryan!
Graduation is Commencement. You are beginning some very hard work. You may hate it at times, but because you are you, you will discover a way to make the hard work playful too. Get your arms around the shoulders of those friends, teachers, teammates, coaches, nurses, aunts, uncles, cousins, and most especially your mom and dad, and they will help you get where you need to go. Kent is waiting for you. Go, go Paige!

  14. Paige, George, Laurie,

I head off to visit the Ropers in Jamaica next week and the country's mantra, "Don't Worry, Be Happy" will bring new and profound meaning to me.

It will be a reunion of life long friends made through Kent swimming, Kent daughters -- which will bring continued thoughts of all of you.

Sally and I will check the internet daily for continued great news...

    With warm heart...

I'm so happy to see how much you are progressing every single day. I've spoken to friends and even the Kent graduates are checking daily (or multiple times a day) to see how you're doing. We're all thinking about you and waiting for you to be well enough to post updates on your own!
    Keep it up!
